Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was required to halt operations for an extended period when dozens of them floated into the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations impacting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the aviation facility.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend passed through the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and near the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
Simultaneously, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its border nation utilizing the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a method that is especially affected by weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Atmospheric equipment are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that these practices become unprofitable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
